AD Ceramic with polychrome paint on light beige slip H. 21.6 cm - W. 15.2 cm Jalisco Ameca standing warrior, buffware with polychrome paints, Mexico City H. 8 ½ in - W. 6 in Provenance: Ancient Art of the New World, New York. Private American collection, New York, 1990 Warrior standing, in a realistic attitude, ready for battle. With his legs slightly bent, he holds a rectangular shield in his left hand and a spear in his right hand. With his head turned to the left, he wears a helmet with a crest decorated with a bird pattern. Many warriors armed with spears, slings or clubs have been modelled in the three states of Nayarit, Jalisco and Colima. Spearheads of the same type as the one held by this warrior have been found in well graves in Jalisco. Some researchers believe that these warriors may have been grave guardians, charged with protecting the deceased in the afterlife. ? This batch is being imported temporarily
