VASE-PORTRAIT MOCHICA CROP, NORTHERN PERU INTERMEDIATE ANCIENT,200-600 AD AD Ceramic with light beige, brick-red and orange-brown slip H. 29.8 cm - W. 16 cm Ugly portrait head vessel, creamware with red and brown-orange slip, Peru H. 11 3/4 in - W. 6 1/3 in Provenance: Economos Works of Art, Santa Fe Private American collection, New York, 1989 This magnificent vase is characteristic of the Mochica IV phase, a phase when Mochica ceramists reached the peak of their art. This vase surmounted by a stirrup-shaped handle represents the portrait of an individual wearing a turban tied on the forehead. He has a severe face with engraved almond-shaped eyes and an aquiline nose adorned with a nariguera, and imposing ear discs framing the head. The vast majority of the portrait vases depict men, most likely from a high social hierarchy. They are distinguished by the realism of their features and are sometimes accompanied by raptors or felines. ? This lot is in temporary importation
