BIBLE. - Evangelium. Secundum Matthaeum, Secundum Marcum, Se - Lot 4
BIBLE. - Evangelium. Secundum Matthaeum, Secundum Marcum, Secundum Lucam, Secundum Johannem. Acta apostolorum. - Pauli Apostoli Epistolae. Epistolae catholicae. Apocalypsis B. Johannis. - Summa totius sacrae scripturae. Decem Dei verba sive praecepta. Paris, Robert Estienne, 1541. 3 parts in one volume in-8 of 211 ff., (1) blank f., 155 ff, (1) ff. of printing, (16) ff. of index, (4) ff. of notices to the reader and (12) ff. for the Decem praecepta : fawn morocco, framed with two double fillets bordered with roulettes, fan motif in the corners and rosette in the centre, all gilt, spine decorated, gilt edges (17th century binding). Nice edition of the New Testament, annotated, published and printed by Robert I Estienne. In the Censures of the theologians of Paris (1552), the humanist exposed the reasons for his being put on the Index: "Ung peu après aucuns d'entre eulx crioyent en chaire impudemment, sans m'espargner, ne celer mon nom, que j'avoye imprimé des annotations bien dangereuses : because I expounded the passages of Purgatory and the Confession differently than they were accustomed to believe that I was a shrewd and cautious man who sowed heresies under the shadow of public utility. [...] for the third time I was forced to hide myself." The New Testament consists of two parts, each with its own title page and foliotation: followed by the index and notice to the reader. Bound at the end is a Latin piece giving the Ten Commandments and an abridged extract from the Holy Scriptures (12 unnumbered leaves). Richly bound in gilt morocco, offering a fine example of "fan" decoration. Handwritten bookplate on the title: Jacobus Lambert. Some old underlining. Moulding affecting about twenty leaves in the second part, erasing in passing some marginal annotations. Margins of the last part trimmed, with loss of some letters. Discrete restoration at the tail of the binding. (Renouard, Estienne, p. 51.)
