GUEVARA (Antonio de) - Lot 22
GUEVARA (Antonio de) Les Epistres dorées, et Discours salutaires. Translated from Spanish into French by the Lord of Guttery, Doctor of Medicine. Together the revolt that the Spaniards made against their young Prince, the year one thousand five hundred and twenty. And the outcome of it. Avec un traicté des travaux & privileges des Galeres. Lyon, Estienne Michel, 1578. 3 parts in one volume in-8 of (8) ff. 352, 304 and 256 pp. vellum with covers, gilt fillet, gilt medallion with arabesque motifs in the centre, smooth spine decorated, title in ink, gilt edges (period binding). New edition, corrected, of the translation by Jean de Guterry, first published in 1556. Printed on two columns in Roman type, with numerous italic headlines, it comes from the presses of Estienne Michel from Lyon, whose typographical mark adorns the title. The Epistolas familiares, known in French as Epîtres dorées, were a huge success throughout Europe in the 16th century. Along with The Clock of the Princes, it is one of the principal books of Antonio de Guevara, a Franciscan monk born around 1480 and who died in 1545, preacher at the court of Charles V, inquisitor of Toledo and bishop of Mondonedo. Seditions and troubles are described in it: the means of composing them and avoiding them are declared: the secrets of nature are clearly painted: the points of the Holy Scripture to exhort and console are dexterously appropriated: the histories are very well practised: the antiquities of great dexterity are researched and examined: the useful and recreational things are not spared: the remedies of Medicine are taught. Tellement que cest oeuvre comme d'une Boutique garnie de toutes espèces de Drogues, on pourra tirer. Attractive copy in its first gilt vellum binding. Numerous passages underlined in pen. Manuscript bookplate erased and old penciled number on the title. Armorial bookplate on the first lining. Light freckling on some leaves. Small loss of vellum at the top cover.
