SENEQUE - Lot 36
SENEQUE Opera omnia ex ult. J. Lipsii emendatione ; et Rhetoris quae extant ex And. Schotti recens. Amsterdam, Guillaume Jansson Blaeu, 1628. 2 parts in a small volume in-12 of (6) ff., 619 pp. misfigured 609 without missing, (1) p., 221 pp., (5) ff, the last two blank : red morocco, thin chain framing, boards decorated with compartments drawn by curved and straight scrolls and black interlacing, the compartments decorated with a multitude of filigree irons (some compartments tinted in lemon), two chased gilt metal clasps in the form of shells on leather strap, repetition of the decoration on the spine, inner scroll, gilt edges (period binding). Remarkable typographical edition, printed on two columns in small type with 54 lines per page. It is adorned with an attractive allegorical title-frontispiece, with effigies of Hercules and Ulysses, engraved in intaglio. (Brunet, t. V, col. 276.) A fine copy, in a delightful mosaic binding with compartments, executed in the workshop of Macé Ruette. Active in the first half of the 17th century (between 1606 and 1638 approximately), Macé Ruette succeeded Clovis Eve in 1634 as the King's bookbinder. The arrangement of the decoration is typical of his compositions, in particular the irregularly outlined compartments. Several of the irons from his workshop can be found here: the filigree iron depicting a five-petalled flower stem, a scrolled volute, and the four-leaf clover here struck in a small medallion. They are reproduced by Raphaël Esmerian in the synoptic tables of the catalogue of his sale (II, 1972, Appendix A-II). Horizontal tear without missing to table leaf Nn2. Hinges a little marked and some discrete restorations to the corners.
