MOREAU (Pierre) - Lot 48
MOREAU (Pierre) The Holy Prayers of the Christian soul. Written & engraved after the natural of the pen. Paris, Jean Hénault, 1649. Small in-8 of (106) ff. : long-grained red morocco, boards decorated with two gilt frames each formed by a double fillet bordered on either side by a scroll, small gilt fleuron in the corners, spine decorated, the caissons decorated with a repeated iron and small scroll irons, inner scroll, gilt edges (period binding). Charming and famous 17th century book of piety, entirely engraved and decorated with burin. It is decorated with an architectural title-frontispiece bearing in the upper part the coat of arms of Queen Anne of Austria, to whom these holy prayers are dedicated. The text, engraved in calligraphic style, is set in various frames finely engraved in intaglio and decorated with various motifs (flowers, plants, birds, insects, bouquets, flowering vases, baskets, horns of plenty, cherubs, cherubs' heads, scrolls, etc.); some thirty small compositions, mostly full-page engravings, representing the royal coat of arms, bouquets, allegories of the deadly sins, etc, Calligrapher and printer to the King, Pierre Moreau (ca. 1600-1648) is the inventor of cursive printers imitating calligraphy. He offered a graphic translation of the then flourishing baroque literature. This attempt to renew French typography remained a "dead letter" and his typefaces were not reused. Isabelle de Conihout has listed 32 editions produced between 1643 and 1648 (Poésie & calligraphie imprimée à Paris du XVIIe siècle, 2004, p. 120). Rich contemporary binding, probably executed in Paris. On one endpaper, stamp in violet ink of the Château de Reyrieux by Trévoux (Ain), former property of the Escoffier family. A few light freckles.
