MORTAR BIBLE. - Histoire du Vieux et du Nouveau Testament. A - Lot 53
MORTAR BIBLE. - Histoire du Vieux et du Nouveau Testament. Antwerp, Pierre Mortier, 1700. 2 volumes in-folio, red morocco with long grain, large gilt border, spine decorated, inner scroll, lining and endpapers of water green tabis, gilt edges (Bozérian). Remarkable edition, called Bible de Mortier, illustrated with 2 frontispieces, a repeated fleuron on the titles, 3 vignettes at the head, several caps, 214 figures out of text each containing two subjects, and 5 double-page maps, all finely engraved in intaglio after various artists including Bernard Picart. Beautiful copy in large paper, before the nails, in a binding signed by Bozérian. It is enriched with 2 very beautiful original drawings by Bernard Picart, signed (about 137 x 206 mm), and a separate edition of the 31 ornamental engravings (fleuron, vignettes and culs-de-lampe). The 2 original drawings, well executed in ink and wash on fine paper, in reverse as it should be in relation to the engravings, have been mounted in volume I between pp. 96-97 and 244-245. The suite of 31 ornamental engravings is printed separately on 16 leaves, at the end of volume II. The copy was included in a Morgand & Fatout catalog (1882, n°30). Some scratches on the second plate of volume I.
