Mama mask - Lot 69
Mama mask Nigeria Wood H. 51 cm The term Mama grouped together several ethnic groups of the Jos plateau and was coined for foreigners, while local people could refer to themselves as inhabitants of a particular village or as descendants of an ancestor common to several communities. This mask would have been used as part of a masquerade called Mangam by groups such as the Kantana, Mada, Rindre, Kulere, and Ron of Sha (see Barbara Frank, 2011).
