S'ensuyvent les faitsz de maitre Alain Chartier contenant en soi douze livres dont les no[m]s sont en la table cy a-près. Which deal with several things concerning the wars made by the Angloys. Paris, Michel le Noir, 15 mars 1514. Small in-4 (192 x 137 mm) of [132] ff. (sig. a-h8/4 i4 k8 l-m4 n-q8/4 r-z4/8) Midnight blue jansenist morocco, ribbed spine, lemon morocco lining, gilt fillet in frame, gilt edges (Allô). A very rare edition of the works of Alain Chartier, secretary of Charles VII, which includes, in addition to Le Courtier, the Livre des quatre dames telling the story of four women who lost their husbands at the battle of Azincourt. It is printed in gothic type on 2 columns and is illustrated with initials on a sifted background, a large woodcut representing scribes repeated twice, and a woodcut genealogical table. A very fine copy, impeccably established by Allô. Restored tear to 1 leaf. Provenance : Nicolas-Antoine Labbey de Billy (1753-1825) with his wet stamp on the title "Bibliotheca Billiana". The notice of the BnF mentions that this historian was a preacher in Versailles (1786). Member of the commune of Besançon (1790), he refused to take the ecclesiastical oath and went into exile, then returned to France in 1809 and was then professor of history at the Faculty of Letters of Besançon. Ex-libris stamp (Psyches iatreion). Pierre Berès in one of his catalogs attributes this bookplate to Arsène Houssaye (?). Brunet, I, 1812-1813. De Backer 146. Tchemerzine II, p. 288 ("very rare"), which cites only 2 copies passed through the sales. Moreau, Editions parisiennes, II, 1514, n°795. Bechtel, Gothiques, C-275 : "3 known copies" (quotes this copy)
