Missale Secundum Ritum Augustensis Ecclesie diligenter emend - Lot 16
Missale Secundum Ritum Augustensis Ecclesie diligenter emendatum & locupletatum : ac in meliorem ordinem q[ue]z antehac digestum. [Dillingen, Sebald Mayer], 1555. In-folio (336 x 200 mm) of 472 ff., sow skin on bevelled wooden boards, cold-stamped with a framing formed of fillets and roulette with effigies of saints, crucifixion, floral motifs and heroic characters, chased brass clasps, bluish edges (period binding). Magnificent work, the most beautiful and precious of those issued from the presses of Sebald Mayer, the introducer of printing in Dillingen, former residence of the bishops of Augsburg. This famous Missal according to the Augsburg ritual, whose bishopric founded in the sixth century was once the richest in Christendom, was printed by order of Cardinal and Bishop Otto Truchsess von Waldburg-Trauchburg and was completed two months before the Peace of Augsburg (September 25, 1555), between Catholics and Lutherans, signed by Ferdinand I and the Germanic Electors. Otto Truchsess von Waldburg-Trauchburg (1514-1573) founded a university in 1549 in the Bavarian town of Dillingen in order to contribute to the development of the Catholic Counter-Reformation in Germany. At the same time he provided it with the most valuable propaganda tool: as early as 1550 he brought in the typographer Sebald Mayer, who practiced his art until 1576. Beautifully printed in gothic type, with two columns, in red and black. Superb woodcut illustration by Matthias Gerung of Nordlingen, including : a frame on the title decorated with the coat of arms of the sponsor of the work, cardinal attributes, a figure of Christ and those of Saint Affre, Saint Dionise, Saint Hilaria, Saint Narcissus and Saint Digne, 2 magnificent full-page figures (335 x 225 mm), representing the Virgin and Child and a Crucifixion, a large figure with the Evangelists and the Apostles, placed in a large and beautiful architectural frame, repeated, with different figures in the lower register. The text is decorated with nearly 700 historiated letters, some of which are very large. A very fine copy, presenting the 8 leaves of the Canon (8 ff.) printed on vellum and superbly illuminated in period colors: full-page Crucifixion, an initials and a medallion with the paschal lamb. An amateur has glued to the lower back cover a beautiful seventeenth-century drawing in pen, brown ink and wash, with a text in pen. Small wormholes affecting the first 113 leaves, and in the margins partly affecting the text, from leaf 177 to the end. Small marginal restoration on the last leaf of the Canon. Worm holes on the boards. Corners rubbed, snags on the second board.
