OVIDE - Lot 22
OVIDE Metamorphoses. Antwerp, ex officina Plantiniana, apud viduam, & Ioannem Moretum, [1591]. Small oblong in-8 (103 x 130 mm.) of 361 pp., [1] p. (printer's mark), [10] ff. Havana morocco, triple gilt fillet framing the boards, spine ribbed and decorated, gold fillet on the edges, inner gilt border, untrimmed (Trautz-Bauzonnet). Very rare ORIGINAL EDITION of this beautiful Ovid illustrated with an ornate title, a portrait of the author and 178 fine copper engravings by Pierre van der BORCHT. "The illustrations themselves are inspired by the woodcuts of Bernard Salomon in the edition of the Metamorphoses which appeared in Lyon in 1557. However, van der Borcht borrowed only the general lines of the compositions, which he placed in front of meticulously drawn landscapes full of local colors, sometimes populated with secondary characters borrowed from popular life in Flanders [...] he is thus linked to the contemporary school of old Bruegel and the Flemish landscape painters" (Delen II, 92-93). A fine copy with very large margins, untrimmed, from the Robert HOE library with engraved bookplate. Lower spine RESTORED. Funck, 374. Belgica Typographia 3913. Pierre Berès, catalog Pays Bas anciens, n°71 (22 500 F).
