PARÉ, AMBROISE Les Oeuvres d'Ambroise Paré, conseiler et premier chirurgien du Roy corrigees et augmentees par luy-mesme, peu auparavant son decés. Paris, Chez Nicolas Buon, 1614. In-folio (356 x 232 mm) of [13] ff. 1228 pp. (with pagination errors), 1 bl. f., [57] ff. (table). Marbled brown calf, spine decorated, red edges (18th century binding). Seventh edition of this famous treatise on surgery, illustrated with an engraved title, a portrait of the author and nearly 400 woodcuts showing surgical instruments of the time, scenes of operations, monsters, etc. The author, surgeon to kings (moreover, the architectural title-frontispiece of this edition bears the intertwined figures of Henri II and Catherine de Médicis), who treated Henri II alongside Vesalius, François II and Charles IX, and who was appointed first surgeon under the reign of Henri III, is no longer in the limelight. He is considered the father of modern surgery. Note here the twenty-fifth book dealing with monsters and the twenty-seventh with distillations. A very nice copy, very well preserved, in an antique binding. Joints slightly cracked in places Discreet restorations to the binding, one wood faded, a pale marginal wetness on 6 leaves.
