[VAUGELAS, Claude Favre de] - Lot 28
[VAUGELAS, Claude Favre de] Remarks on the French language useful to those who want to speak and write well. Paris, Veuve Jean Camusat et Pierre Le Petit, 1647. In-4 of 1 frontispiece, [26] ff. 593 (with pagination errors), [25] pp. Brown granite basane, arms in the center of the upper board, spine with richly decorated nerves, speckled edges (period binding). ORIGINAL EDITION dedicated to the chancellor Séguier, of this capital work for the history of the French language. It is decorated with an allegorical frontispiece attributed to François Chauveau, a title vignette by Jean Picart, 2 headbands, a cul-de-lampe and 2 lettering, all engraved in intaglio. As Tchemerzine points out (V, 448), the pages numbered 257-296 do not exist in this edition. Claude Favre (1585-1650), baron of Pérouges and lord of Vaugelas, was one of the first members of the Académie française at the end of 1634. These Remarques sur la langue française, which constitute his main work, had a major role in the definition and codification of the proper use of spoken and written French in the classical period. A very fine copy in a contemporary binding bearing the arms of the Du Mas family in Anjou (?) (Guigard II, 193 reproduces these arms: argent, fretty gules, on a chief chequered or and gules). Lower headpiece restored. Gilding of the arms almost absent. A few leaves browned and cut short, including the first one, and small marginal wetness on a few leaves. A restored corner
