ERASME - Lot 33
ERASME Colloquia, cum notis selectis variorum, addito indice novo. Leiden and Rotterdam, Ex Officina Hackiana, 1664. In-8 (190 x 120 mm) of [6] ff. 784 pp, [10] ff. Full red morocco, triple gilt fillet on the boards, spine decorated with nerfs, inner gilt roulette, red morocco lining, gilt roulette on the edges, gilt edges on marbling (period binding). Careful edition of Erasmus' Colloquia, published by Cornelis Schrevel and illustrated with a beautiful copper-engraved frontispiece by Bernard Picart, signed with his initials, depicting Erasmus seated at a work table and surrounded by three doctors. Erasmus gave his all in his Colloquia, a didactic work par excellence inspired by a genre very much in vogue during Antiquity. He deals with Christian morality, peace and belles-lettres with finesse, demonstrating an incomparable mastery of the Latin language in this tormented era when modern utilitarian languages were gradually taking precedence over sacred and classical languages. A few faint freckles and browned leaves. A superb copy, finely bound in doubled morocco and coming from the Lamoignon library (1791, I, n°3507), bearing a wet stamp on page 3 of the text, a mark that Chrétien-François de Lamoignon (1644-1709) had affixed.
