QUESNEL, Pasquier - Lot 55
QUESNEL, Pasquier Christian prayers in the form of meditations on all the mysteries of our Lord, of the Blessed Virgin & on the Sundays & feasts of the year. A Paris, chez Elie Josset, 1708. 2 volumes in-12 (170 x 10 mm) of [8], 354 pp. ; [8], 398 pp. Lemon morocco, gilt roulette on the boards, spine richly decorated with small gilt dotted irons, gilt roulette on the necks and the endpapers, lining and endpapers of Augsburg gilt paper (J. Enderlin), gilt edges on marble (period binding). This work of piety was first published in 1688 by Roulland. We learn in the Dictionnaire des Hérésies that the author's supporters gave several editions. Speaking about the author: "in the Prières sur la fête de Saint-Bernard he insinuates the heresy of the Decadence and the old age of the Church, and he makes a magnificent eulogy of the nuns of Port-Royal, openly revolted against the two powers." Superb copy in a fine contemporary binding with beautiful Augsburg paper linings from the house of Enderlin. Slight foxing.
