BOUQUET, Martin Recueil des historiens des Gaules et de la France. Paris, Aux depens des Libraires Associés, Delateur et compagnie, 1738-1767. 11 volumes (out of 21) large folio (445 x 300 mm), olive morocco, triple gilt fillet on the boards with arms in the center, spine decorated with gilt numerals and radiating suns, gilt edges (period binding). ORIGINAL EDITION of the first 11 volumes of this monumental and important collection for the history of France, which will see its final version completed in the 19th century. Prestigious, sumptuous and monumental dedication copy, on large paper, in contemporary morocco with the coat of arms and cipher of Louis XV (Olivier pl. 2495, fer 14). It comes from the library of William Beckford with the label of Bernard Quaritch: "The Hamilton Palace, library, Beckford Collection" for the sale of 1882: "Beckford Collection, Sotheby's June 30 - July 13, 1882" (mentioned a twelfth volume which was later removed from the collection). It then passed into the library of Alexander Hamilton who had inherited Beckford, with his bookplate "Honi soit qui mal y pense". A few minor wear and tear to the bindings, some spines a bit sunned, marginal foxing.
