Bembe helmet-mask, Democratic Republic of... - Lot 38 - Giquello
Bembe helmet-mask, Democratic Republic of the Congo Polychrome wood H. 43.5 cm Provenance: - Former French private collection, collected between 1940 and 1950 - Former Belgian private collection - Auctionart, Paris, 5 May 2015 Lot 299 Biblography: - François Neyt, Arts traditionnels et histoire au Zaïre, Société d'arts primitifs, Institut supérieur d'archéologie et d'histoire de l'art, Université catholique de Louvain. Rare and imposing Bembe two-sided palm-mask, from the Kalunga society. The face presents a quite astonishing iconography. It is composed of large concave eyes with cruciform motifs and prominent pupils. The small circular mouth with a hole in it delimits the bottom of the face. The whole is supported by a cylindrical base pierced all around. Its elegant and inventive composition, underlined by a beautiful polychromy, make it a remarkable example of Bembe art.
