Mossi karanga mask, Burkina Faso - Lot 60
Mossi karanga mask, Burkina Faso Polychrome wood H. 128 cm Mossi karanga mask, Burkina Faso H. 50 3/8 in Provenance - Private collection, Belgium Rare monoxyle mask featuring an antelope. The hemispherical face is punctuated by two triangular holes. A thick vertical line runs through the center of the face and flares out towards the top of the skull, before extending into a pair of strongly curved horns. Engraved with geometrical motifs, they meet at the end. Remains of polychromy attest to the presence of an ancient painted surface decoration. This type of mask, called karanga, was used in various ceremonies in Burkina Faso: funerals, cultural celebrations, and ancestor worship. A similar mask was recently acquired by the Musée du Quai Branly - Jacques Chirac (70.2021.29.1).
