Bahinemo mask with hooks, Hunstein Mountains, Papua New Guin - Lot 67
Bahinemo mask with hooks, Hunstein Mountains, Papua New Guinea Wood H. 53 cm Bahinemo mask with hooks, Papua New Guinea H. 21 in Provenance : - Acquired on December 21, 1970 from Gallery 43 (Philip Goldman), London - Collection Franco Ignacio Castelli (1920-2002) - By descent Wooden mask of oblong form representing a face with a surrealist composition. The tubular eyes are inscribed in two concentric circles, this composition overhanging a hollowed and toothed mouth. Three hooks emerge on the surface, one on the forehead, a second on the chin and a third between the eyes. The hooked masks appeared during the men's initiation rites and were associated with the clan's elders and the spirits of the forest. Bahinemo art from the eastern region of Sepik Province caused a sensation when it was discovered by Europeans in the 1950s, especially among modernist artists.
