Chokwe mwana pwo mask, Angola - Lot 70
Chokwe mwana pwo mask, Angola Wood, fiber, metal H. 30 cm Chokwe Mwana Pwo mask, Angola H. 11 3/4 in Provenance: - Pierre Dartevelle, Belgium, 1994 - Marc Lorré (1935-1995), Antwerp - By descent - Christie's, Paris, December 11, 2012, lot 78 - Private collection Important Tchokwe mask depicting a stylized human face with fine features. Under a rounded forehead marked with a cross-shaped scarification, the half-closed eyes are inscribed in concave arches. The eyebrows and eyelids are enhanced with dark pigments. The nose, framed by scarification marks, surmounts a mouth with turned-up lips and pointed teeth. The mask has retained its finely woven fiber headdress. This work of great refinement is similar to the female Pwo masks. They represent the ideal of Chokwe female beauty and embody the spirit of illustrious ancestors. They were worn by men in order to pay homage to women and in particular to the mothers of the initiates. The elegant headdress evokes the elaborate hairstyles, often made of clay, worn by women. The frontal scarification is the chingelyengelye cross, an identifying mark of the Tchokwe until the beginning of the 20th century.
