Bambara Korè mask, Mali - Lot 71
Bambara Korè mask, Mali Wood H. 29 cm Bambara Korè mask, Mali H. 11 1/2 in Provenance : - Loudmer, June 25, 1992, lot 13 - Private collection Important Bambara anthropomorphic mask with oozing patina and fine scarifications. Under a rounded forehead, the face is elongated, the chin prognathic. The deep superciliary arches surmount two quadrangular holes representing the eyes. The nose is powerful, the mouth half-open. The whole gives off a striking expression. Colleyn (2009, pl. 36) about a comparable mask: "This is an old piece (...), and of a relatively rare type. It is reminiscent of certain sula (monkey) masks that are used at the end of the kore initiation, but this mask, with its particularly careful finishing, is exceptionally anthropomorphic. Two very similar masks were probably made by the same artist or the same workshop. One was exhibited by Alain de Monbrison at the Biennale des Antiquaires in Paris in 2000, the other by Bernard Dulon in Shanghai in 2007 (reproduced in Colleyn, op. cit).
