Taped Mambila statue, Cameroon - Lot 72
Taped Mambila statue, Cameroon Wood H. 64 cm Mambila Taped figure, Cameroon H. 25 in Provenance: - Morton Dimonstein, Los Angeles - Edward Glauder, Santa Monica - Pierre Dartevelle, Brussels - Private collection Large Mambila statue featuring a stylized male figure. The tubular eyes with hollow arches are inscribed in an ovoid head. The nose is short and blunt, the mouth open and hollow. The hands meet at the level of the pear-shaped bust. The long legs are made up of a succession of two superimposed triangles. The back of the head has a deep quadrangular cavity. An intense expression emerges from the whole. This type of statue participated in the cult of the ancestors and was placed in a dedicated hut, maintained by the village elders. Called tadep, these figures were invariably made of soft, light wood. Mambila sculptures of this size are particularly rare. See Sotheby's, New York, May 16, 2013, lot 118 for a comparable example measuring 48 cm in height.
