Dan-Kran kagle mask, Liberia/Ivory Coast - Lot 74
Dan-Kran kagle mask, Liberia/Ivory Coast Wood and traces of polychromy H. 28 cm Dan-Kran kagle mask, Liberia/Ivory Coast H. 11 in Provenance: - Antoine Ferrari de la Salle, Abidjan - Galerie L'Accrosonge, Paris Exhibition: - Masques du Haut Cavally, Galerie L'Accrosonge, Parcours des Mondes, 2006 Publication: - Delon B. Jeudi-Ballini M., La passion de l'art primitif, enquête sur les collectionneurs, Gallimard, 2008, cover. Beautiful and ancient Kagle mask, representing a stylized face with remarkable cubic volumes. The eyes are represented by openwork tubes, while the forehead, the cheeks and the mouth are treated in vigorous flat tints, real projections opening out from the face of the mask. The surface retains beautiful traces of polychromy and crusty material. Old rectangular holes. The disruptive Kaglé mask was intended to create disorder during village masquerades. By his tumultuous behavior he generated laughter and mad runs from the spectators whom he chased by throwing forked sticks at them.
