Jacob PYNAS (Haarlem 1583 - Delft 1631)
Ruth and Naomi Panel laminated to a parquet panel 68 x 94.5 cm Provenance: Anonymous sale, Paris, Tajan, June 22, 2011, no. 14, reproduced. Ruth is a biblical character whose story is told in the Book of Ruth, which is classified as a Ketuvim in the Jewish tradition and among the Christian historical books. With her second marriage, after the death of her first husband, the figure of Ruth is that of a convert who is attached to the values of Judaism and she is the great-grandmother of King David. The subject painted here is Ruth, wife of Mahlon, whose parents, Elimelech and Naomi, moved to the land of Moab to escape the famine in Judea. When Mahlon dies, Naomi decides to return to Judea. Ruth follows her mother-in-law and they settle in Bethlehem in poverty at harvest time. The subject of Ruth and Naomi is often represented in the sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries by pre-Rembrane painters such as Pieter Lastman (Ruth and Naomi, Lower Saxony Regional Museum, Hanover), following the publication of the Kopfl Bible (Strasbourg, 1530). The donkey is a narrative element used by these painters contemporary to Rembrandt.
