HOURS FOR THE USE OF ROME. S.l.n.d. [at the... - Lot 46 - Giquello
HOURS FOR THE USE OF ROME. S.l.n.d. [at the bottom of f. C4v°] : Paris, for Antoine Vérard, 18 September 1506. Large gothic in-8, 100 ff.n.ch., eggplant morocco, framing decoration formed by multiple sets of fillets and a large cold roulette, spine decorated with cold fillets, inner lace, gilt and chased edges (Fratelli Binda Milano). Bohatta, n°747. - Brunet, Heures gothiques, n°141. - Lacombe, n°155. - MacFarlane, n°236. Nice gothic edition of this book of hours for the use of Rome, printed for Antoine Vérard, whose large typographical mark occupies the whole of the first leaf, placed in an architectural frame. Almanac for 18 years, from 1503 to 1520. The illustration includes the figure of the anatomical man and 16 large full-page figures placed in frames consisting of four engraved blocks: in the lower block, we see that the artist has tried to represent the projected shadow of the base and its cul-de-lampe. The borders are almost all decorated with subjects from the Old and New Testaments but are also sometimes populated with fantastic creatures; they also host the iconographic cycle of the dance of the dead, for men in 24 woodcuts and for women in 24 others, these unfolding and repeating in total on 43 pages. Copy on paper, rubricated with red and blue, with beautiful margins (h. 215 mm). A few leaves a little stained, not serious; two leaves inverted. Spine and top of boards faded, nerves a little rubbed.
