HOURS FOR USE IN PARIS. Paris, s.d. [at the... - Lot 48 - Giquello
HOURS FOR USE IN PARIS. Paris, s.d. [at the colophons] : Veuve Thielman Kerver, 16 February 1522. In-4, 132 ff, fawn calf, boards and spine decorated with gilt and silver decoration with brown wax highlights, framed by fillets and a scroll, large central cartouche with interlacing motifs on an azure background, with reserve in the middle containing the words charlotte (first board) and charpentier (second board), and large spandrels with interlacing and floral scrolls on an azure background, field of the boards covered with a fleur-de-lis scattered with various large irons, traces of ties, spine decorated with gilt fillets and a repetition of oval friezes, gilt edges (Binding of the period). Brun, p. 212. - Bohatta, n°314. - Lacombe, n°324. - Moreau, t. III, n°515. A very fine edition of the great hours of Kerver, given by Yolande Bonhomme, widow of Thielman Kerver whose typographical mark adorns the title (cf. Silvestre, n°501). Printed in gothic type, in red and black, with 32 lines per page. Almanac for 14 years, from 1523 to 1536. Remarkable and abundant engraved illustration, in a very shaded style: it includes the figure of the anatomical man, 12 oval figures for the calendar representing the twelve ages of life, among which the one for the month of February, remained famous for its scene of the spanking at the school, 46 large figures drawn from the Old and the New Testament placed in frames of twisted columns or pilasters of Renaissance style, the emblems of the Passion, and 27 small vignettes for the Suffrages. The last quire is occupied by the Recommendations of the deceased. Admirable Parisian binding, adorned with a very rich gilt, silver and brown wax decoration, with beautiful spandrels and a central cartouche with a very elegant design. It is a present copy, probably offered on the occasion of a wedding, for a Charlotte Charpentier whose first and last name are stamped in the middle of the plates in a medallion. From the De Mailly library, with armorial bookplate and manuscript bookplate dated 1816. Old trace of redaction on the anatomical man's sex which is again "uncovered". Small crack on the edge of leaves B4, B5, B6 and K3 (repaired for the latter). Small wormholes in the lower margin of some quires, a few stains without gravity. Restorations to the jaws, again cracked, head and corners.
