JUVÉNAL - Lot 53
JUVÉNAL Satirarum libri V. Sulpiciae satira. Nova editio. Paris, Robert Estienne, 1616. - PERSE. Satirae. Paris, Robert Estienne, 1614. Together 2 works in one volume in-12, dark red morocco, fanfare decoration arranged around a central medallion, which is charged with a gilt coat of arms, spine decorated with a repeated flowery vase, interior roulette, gilt edges (Binding of the time). Edition of Juvenal in the review of Nicolas Rigault (1577-1654), magistrate, philologist and librarian of the King's library, who dedicated it to his friend Jacques-Auguste de Thou who died the following year. Fine printing in small characters. Copy in large paper, in a binding with the fanfare of Le Gascon with the arms of Jacques-Auguste de Thou (1553-1617). In his article on Jacques-Auguste de Thou, published in the Histoire des bibliothèques françaises (t. II, pp. 135-136), Antoine Coron tells us that the bibliophile had gathered at his death nine editions of Juvenal, "all the main ones from the one of Pulmannus in 1566 to the one dedicated to him by Nicolas Rigault in 1616 and that he had it bound twice in embossed morocco with a fanfare". The binding is to be compared with another binding made by Le Gascon for the Thuan library, covering an edition of Phèdre of 1630, also procured by Nicolas Rigault, reproduced in the catalog Reliures françaises du XVIIe siècle, chefs-d'œuvre du musée Condé, n°6. The small coat of arms pushed to the center of the boards was also used after 1617 by François-Auguste de Thou, heir of his father's library. Handwritten mark in ink characteristic of the library of the Prince of Soubise on the upper flyleaf. From the libraries of Armand Cigongne and L. Double, with their bookplates (not included in the catalogs). Annotation erased at the bottom of the title. Skilful restorations without gravity to the binding.
