LESFARGUES (Bernard) - Lot 57
LESFARGUES (Bernard) David, heroic poem. Dedicated to Monseigneur le Chancelier. Paris, Pierre Lamy [de l'Imprimerie d'Antoine Chrestien], 1660, In-12, red morocco, triple gilt fillet, coat of arms in the center, crowned figure surmounting two crossed laurel palms struck in the corners, ornate spine, same figure repeated in the caissons, fine inner lace, gilt edges, chased and painted with floral motifs with the same figure (period binding). First edition of this heroic poem by a lawyer at the Conseil et Parlement. It is decorated with a frontispiece and 8 figures engraved in intaglio by François Chauveau. Present copy, in morocco with unidentified arms and figure, all edges gilt, chased and painted. Regulated and illuminated, it contains the engravings printed on vellum and painted in bright colors. The typographical characters of the title and the chapter headings have been enhanced with gold and blue, and the engraved ornaments (headbands, lettering and caps) have also been colored. Manuscript bookplate on the title: from the monastery of St. Elizabeth. Mention cut at the foot of the title, probably a handwritten ex-libris. Stains on the endpapers and facing leaves. Crack on a few centimeters at one of the spines.
