MANUSCRIT. - Diploma of doctor of philosophy given to Stepha - Lot 61
MANUSCRIT. - Diploma of doctor of philosophy given to Stephanus de Sellarius in Padua on January 21, 1581. Manuscript in-4 (about 205 x 150 mm) of 6 unnumbered leaves, the last one blank, red morocco, framed with cold and gilt fillets, large composition of interlocking scrolls and scrolls drawn by gilt fillets, dotted with fleurons; in the center, oval medallion charged with accolades of fleurons and bordered by four motifs decorated with dotted lines forming a rhombus; traces of ties, spine decorated, gilt edges (Italian binding of the time). Manuscript on fine vellum in black and gold italic script, the text framed by a double purple fillet; the rubric In Christi nomine Amen, in gilt capitals, is arranged on three lines and surrounded by a network of fine scrolls and interlacing in purple ink, and the first capital letter is ornamented. At the end, signatures of the assistants, including that of Petrus Matthaeus Corvinus, Juris Doctor Clericus Fanensis, in Episcopatu Paduae. Very beautiful Italian binding of the period, whose decoration, executed with fillet, offers the same construction as a print by Androuet du Cerceau, published in 1550 in the suite of the Small Cartouches. The print is reproduced in an article by Hector Lefuel, "Deux reliures du XVIe siècle d'après Du Cerceau" in a 1926 issue of the journal Byblis. Du Cerceau's print was copied by the artist from the decoration of the Gallery of François I at Fontainebleau, painted by Primaticcio and Rosso in the 1530s. It was also used as a model for a mosaic wax binding (very similar to but different from our decoration) executed in the mid-sixteenth century on a bible printed in Venice in 1538, reproduced in the catalog of the Van der Elst sale (I, 1985, n°29). This piece is of great interest for the history of bookbinding. It is indeed singular to find this model in Italy 30 years after Du Cerceau and 50 years after its creation for Fontainebleau by Italian artists. The binding is preserved in a black chagrin box by Lobstein-Laurenchet. The upper cover is restored to the height of the box and to the adjacent jaws.
