MANUSCRIT. - Christian hours and prayers... - Lot 62 - Giquello
MANUSCRIT. - Christian hours and prayers [sic] dedicated. S.l. [c. 1674]. Manuscript in-4 (215 x 155 mm) of 114 fine paper leaves, long-grained red morocco, framed in the Du Seuil style, coat of arms in the center, spine decorated, interior roulette, edges gilt on marble (Binding of the time). Charming manuscript, admirably calligraphed in black, vermilion and gold. Title inscribed in an architectural frame with two cherubs supporting a garland of fruits and flowers, all drawn with a pen and entirely enhanced with gold. Each page is framed by a double black and gold fillet. The table of the Festes mobiles, given for 7 years from 1674 to 1680, is decorated with numerous small golden motifs. The text is embellished with friezes with scrolls painted at the head of the main chapters, enhanced with gold, and several dozens of initials on a background of foliage and golden scrolls. In addition, 11 intaglio engravings executed by masters of the time (Montcornet and Wierix in particular) have been inserted, 8 of which are provided with large gold painted frames. The beauty of the opening page of the Office des morts, decorated with a macabre band with a skull and crossbones and a pretty initial D decorated with a bird of prey on foliage and painted in a silver color, is noteworthy. The manuscript is presented in a binding with the arms of Jean Auget de Monthyon, lord of Boissy, gentleman ordinary of the King's Chamber and president of the office of Finances of Paris (OHR, pl. 467). From the Charles Cousin library (1891, n°18). Uniform spotting and foxing, ink visible through the paper.
