MANUSCRIT. - General state of the clothing of the various Pe - Lot 63
MANUSCRIT. - General state of the clothing of the various People attached to the service of Monseigneur Count of Artois in his Castles and Houses. S.d. [c. 1788]. Manuscript in-folio (370 x 245 mm), green vellum, coat of arms in the center, gilt inscription on three lines at the top of the first plate, smooth spine, red morocco title page, red speckled edges (Binding of the time). Precious manuscript established by the service of the Garde-Meuble of the Count of Artois (1757-1836), bound with his coat of arms. It bears on the first plate this inscription in gilt capitals : Garde meuble / de Monseigneur / Comte d'Artois. It is the inventory of all the clothes provided to the different persons attached to the service of Louis XVI's brother in his castle of Saint-Germain-en-Laye, his castle of Maisons, his apartments in Paris, his palace of Temple and his pavilion of Bagatelle. It gives us information on how the staff was dressed, the price of each suit, generally all of green cloth edged with silver braid, and the names of some of the people in service in the mid-1780s. Thanks to this document, we can also learn about the specific personnel that a great prince surrounded himself with a few years before the Revolution: castle boy, Swiss guard, gamekeeper, game inspector, gardener, fountain keeper, farm cart driver, sweeper, servant attached to the concierge's office, provisionary, furniture guard boy, wine conductor, archive office boy, dish boy, etc. A general recapitulation of the clothing for 1784 indicates an expenditure of 10000 livres. On the first page, reminder of the regulation of the aforementioned furniture guard where it is stipulated that in the case or none of the places hereafter designated will come to vacate by death, resignation or otherwise in the intervale of a clothing to the other, all the objects composing the aforementioned clothing will be given to the furniture guard of Monseigneur to be delivered to the one who will succeed to the vacant place or to make such other use of it which will be judged suitable. Piece of great interest concerning the life of the count of Artois, but also for the history of the costume at the end of the XVIIIth century. About twenty leaves at the end of the volume are left blank. Split at one of the spines and slightly damaged top cover.
