NOAILLES (Adrien-Maurice, duc de) - Lot 73
NOAILLES (Adrien-Maurice, duc de) Campaign of Monsieur le maréchal duc de Noailles, in Germany, the year 1743. Amsterdam, Marc-Michel Rey, 1760-1761. 2 volumes in-12, lemon morocco, triple gilt fillet, coat of arms in the center, smooth spine decorated, red title and brown tomaison, inner scroll, lining and endpapers of dominoté paper with gilt stars, gilt edges (Binding of the time). First edition. Raised to the dignity of marshal of France in 1734, the duke of Noailles (1678-1766) was commander-in-chief of the royal army during the War of the Austrian Succession (1740-1748). The letters addressed by him and his officers to the king and to the minister d'Argenson constitute a first-rate account of the campaign of 1743, marked in particular by the defeat of the French army against the Anglo-Hanoverian troops commanded by King George II at the battle of Dettingen on June 27. Copy with the arms of Charles-Henri d'Estaing (1729-1794), commander of the royal fleet in the West Indies and on the American coast during the War of Independence, appointed admiral in 1792 and guillotined in 1794 (OHR, pl. 1594). Interesting provenance of this other French officer who fought the English. A nice copy, well bound in lemon morocco. Volume I, tear without missing in the page of folio C2. Slight rubbing to the binding.
