PÉTRARQUE - Lot 76
PÉTRARQUE Il Petrarca con nuove et brevi dichiarationi. Lyon, Guillaume Rouille, 1550. In-16, black morocco, boards framed with three cold fillets, border formed by a roulette between two gilt fillets delimiting a rectangle decorated with gilt motifs, traces of ties, three-ribbed spine decorated with cold fillets and palettes with repetition of the same gilt motif at the head and tail, gilt and chased edges (Binding of the period). A careful edition, printed in italic and roman characters, dedicated to Lucantonio Ridolfi, a Florentine gentleman (Baudrier, t. IX, pp. 175-176 - Brun, p. 272). It includes the sonnets, the canzoni and the Trionfi, the latter occupying pp. 471-550. This is the first of the two editions published by Rouille under the same date: it has no privilege and the epistle is dated January 11, 1550. Nice portrait of Petrarch and Laure, seen in profile and facing each other, in a heart placed in the center of a Renaissance-style grotesque cartouche, and 6 small oval woodcut vignettes for the triumphs of Love, Chastity, Death, Fame, Time and Divinity: these, due to Peter Vase or a draftsman of his school, are based on the woodcuts of the Venetian edition of Giolito of 1543 and are here in first printing. Very nice Italian binding, whose decoration is obtained by the repetition of a singular gilt iron. Handwritten bookplate dated Bologna 1795, and ex-dono in English dated 1855, on the first endpapers. Some light foxing. Rubbing to the nerves and spines.
