RICAUT (Paul) - Lot 80
RICAUT (Paul) History of the present state of the Ottoman Empire : containing the political maxims of the Turks... Paris, Sébastien Mabre-Cramoisy, 1670. in-4, lemon morocco, triple gilt fillet, coat of arms in the center, ornate spine, brown title page, inner scroll, gilt edges (18th century binding). First French edition, translated by Briot. It is illustrated with a beautiful frontispiece, 3 vignettes in the header and 21 vignettes in the text, all engraved in intaglio by Sébastien Le Clerc. The vignettes in the text represent the sultan, dignitaries, women of the seraglio, the chief of the black eunuchs, a spahi, a janissary, etc. Beautiful copy with the arms of Madame Sophie (1734-1782), the sixth daughter of Louis XV and Marie Leczinska. It is known that the volumes that belonged to the Dames de France can only be distinguished by the color of the morocco on which their arms are stamped, the subtle lemon hue being reserved for the books of Madame Sophie. In his book on the bibliophile women of France, Quentin Bauchart focuses on the libraries of the daughters of Louis XV. Among the fifty or so books that belonged to Madame Sophie, many were history books (t. II, pp. 123-180). Appears in the Morgand bulletin under n°37548 (November 1899). Ex-libris G. J. Arvanitidi Byzantini. Stain in the bottom of the title and the first leaf of the preface, some yellowed leaves or quires. Minor scuffing on the second board, small rubbing on the upper cover.
