ROUSSEAU (Jean-Baptiste) - Lot 83
ROUSSEAU (Jean-Baptiste) Works. New edition, revised, corrected & enlarged on the Author's manuscripts. Brussels, s.n. [Paris], 1743. 3 volumes large in-4, red morocco, triple gilt fillet, coat of arms in the center, spine ornamented, lemon title and tomaison pieces, interior roulette, gilt edges on marbling (Binding of the time). Edition printed with the typeface of Pierre-Simon Fournier le jeune, author of the famous Manuel typographique (1764-1766). One of the most beautiful illustrations by Cochin fils, including a fleuron on the title of each volume, 12 vignettes at the head, 12 ornamented letters and 62 culs-de-lampe, all drawn and engraved by the artist himself, of a remarkable execution. Copy on large Hollande paper, with the arms of the duc de Choiseul (1719-1785), great minister of Louis XV and friend of the Encyclopedists. It contains the beautiful portrait of the author, interpreted on copperplate by Schmidt after Jacques Aved. It is this portrait that Jean-Baptiste Rousseau boasts in a letter addressed to his friend Jacques Aved, a painter born in Douai, in September 1738: Thanks to your kindnesses, Sir, & to the excellence of your talents, I can flatter myself of an honor that neither the Pindars nor the Horatii have ever had, it is to have, all puny reject that I am of these great men, a Zeuxis for painter, & to make pass to the posterity my features in the defect of my works (see t. III, pp. 430-432). High quality binding, with a singular decoration on the spine where one can notice, on the lemon morocco headpieces, hands of faith, and at the foot, a palette showing birds fluttering in foliage. From the Maurice Péreire library (II, 1980, n°365). A few leaves foxed (also the portrait), slight wetness at the foot of some quires of volume III.
