TACHARD (père Guy) - Lot 89
TACHARD (père Guy) Second voyage of Father Tachard and the Jesuits sent by the King to the Kingdom of Siam. Containing various remarks of History, Physics, Geography, & Astronomy. Paris, Daniel Hortemels, 1689. In-4, red morocco, triple gilt fillet, fleuron in the corners, coat of arms in the center, spine decorated, interior roulette, gilt edges on marbling (Binding of the time). Cordier, Indosinica, col. 953. First edition, illustrated with an engraved portrait on the title, a vignette with the coat of arms of France at the head of the dedication to the king, 2 vignettes in the text (on pages 264 and 286) and 6 folding plates engraved on copper by Vermeulen representing plants and animals. Father Tachard (1651-1712), a Jesuit missionary, made two trips to Siam, the first in 1685-1686, and the second in 1687-1689. His two accounts are important for the knowledge of the kingdom of Siam at the dawn of the 18th century. A well-bound copy, used by the boarders of Saint-Cyr. It bears on the boards the emblem of the Royal House of Saint-Cyr, a crowned and fleurdelisé cross: founded in 1686 on the initiative of Madame de Maintenon, this boarding school provided a free education for young girls of the nobility without fortune. Important russet stain affecting 3 leaves at the beginning of the volume, two leaves of the B book a little crumpled in the lower margin, light freckles. Trace of wetness at the end of the spine.
