Ɵ - VIRGIL. The Works, translated from Latin into French. Paris, Guillaume Auvray, 1582. In-4, supple vellum overlay, gilt fillet in frame, central medallion with interlacing motifs on azure ground, the middle left in reserve, smooth spine decorated, gilt edges (Period binding). First edition of this French translation, including the Bucolics, the Georgics, the Aeneid, the Epigrams and the Moretum. It was prepared by two Norman poets: Robert and Antoine Le Chevalier, sieurs d'Agneaux (or d'Aigneaux), born in Vire in the second half of the 16th century. According to the translators, this undertaking took them two years of work: "We have therefore taken pains to teach him [Virgil] this language faithfully, to the best of our rudeness. [...] to carry out such a high & laborious enterprise, we saw ourselves in the end after the vigils & sweats of two years, to have in some part attained the effect & accomplishment of our desire. Large and beautiful typographical mark on the title, said to be Bellerophon, copy made by Auvray of the mark used by his colleague Charles Périer (cf. Renouard, n°871). Wet stamp : Mr Houdaille Receveur de l'Eure. Staining on the whole volume, but the copy is preserved in its first gilt vellum binding, very attractive condition. CORRECTION: Binding fasteners a little loose, binding slightly detached from volume Circle drawn with a compass on the second cover of the binding Frère, t. I, pp. 8-9. - Diane Barbier-Mueller, Inventaire..., n°461.
