Ɵ les Marguerites poétiques, tirées des plus fameux poëtes françois, tant anciens que modernes, Réduites en forme de lieux communs & selon l'ordre Alphabétique. Lyon, Barthélemy Ancelin, 1613. Large volume in-4, ivory vellum, smooth spine bearing the title in ink, spotted edges (Binding of the period). First edition of the Marguerites poétiques, anthology presented by the author as a collection of all the most beautiful points of our Poets & consequently the quintessence & cresme of the most beautiful minds of France. Printed on two columns in small italic characters, it is decorated with a superb title-frontispiece engraved in intaglio by Léonard Gaultier, the title placed in a panel flanked on both sides by full-length portraits of Ronsard and Du Bartas and surmounted by a historiated scene depicting the nine muses crowning Homer. This vast compilation gathers, classified by subject or by expression in alphabetical order, as in a dictionary, a multitude of verses of various poets: Baïf, Belleau, Jodelle, Desportes, Garnier, Flamin de Birague, Gamon, Dagonneau (le sieur de Cholières), etc., but especially Ronsard and Du Bartas who are quoted more frequently. On pp. 209-214 and p. 441, versified quotations will be of interest to lovers of hunting: Invention de la chasse, Chasser aux bestes, Contre la chasse, etc. A very pleasant copy in contemporary vellum, from the Justin Godart library (engraved bookplate). Paper a little foxed uniformly. On the title-frontispiece, the date of the edition, which is indeed 1613, was formerly modified in pen to 1623 by the addition of a figure. J. P. Barbier-Mueller, II, n°106. - Lachèvre, t. I, p. 70. - Picot, Rothschild, n°816. - Diane Barbier-Mueller, Inventaire..., n°920.
