BELLEAU (Rémy).
Ɵ Ode presented to my lord the duke of Guyse on his return from Calais. Paris, De l'Imprimerie d'André Wechel, 1558. Booklet in-4, red morocco, jansenist, interior lace, gilt edges (Riviere & Son). First edition of this occasional piece celebrating the beautiful feat of arms of the duke of Guise, François de Lorraine, who had just erased two centuries of humiliations for France by taking back, on January 8, 1558, the place of Calais, occupied by the English since 1347 and considered impregnable. This coin was apparently distributed among a few privileged people: the copy bears the trace of its fold in two in the horizontal direction, probably intended to facilitate its distribution. The ink of the upper part of the title has discharged on the lower part, which shows that this folding was made, if not at the printer's, at least at the end of the press. Copy coming from the library of General Willems, it has been listed in the catalog of the Berès bookshop, Des Valois à Henri IV, under n°25. A cracked bit on the height of a box. J. P. Barbier-Mueller, III, n°72. - Diane Barbier-Mueller, Inventaire..., n°44.
