BELLEFOREST (François de).
Ɵ La Pyrénée, et pastorale amoureuse, contenant divers accidens amoureux, descriptions de païsages, histoires, fables & occurrences des choses advenues de nostre temps, serving as the forerunner of Adolescence. S.l. [Paris], Gervais Mallot, 1571. In-8, blond glazed calf, triple gilt fillet, gilt numeral at the foot of the first plate, spine decorated, triple fillet inside, gilt edges (Simier R. du Roi). First edition, very rare, of this romantic pastoral intermingled with verses whose setting is the Pyrenees, the author's homeland. The work is often considered the first French pastoral novel (cf. Margaret Collins Weitz, "François de Belleforest's La Pyrénée: The First French Pastoral Novel" in Quarterly Renaissance, XXXI, 1978). It seems to be generally confused with the Pastorale amoureuse, a play in Alexandrian verse published by Belleforest two years earlier in 1569. A copy of Jules Marsan (1867-1939), with his gilt figure at the bottom of the first plate. We owe this Nervalian bibliophile a study on the Pastorale dramatique (1905) where, obviously, he reserved a few pages to the Pyrenees. First plate detached (the old restoration to the hinge has broken). Some uniform foxing. Picot, Rothschild, n°3320. - Diane Barbier-Mueller, Inventaire..., n°52.
