BÉROALDE DE VERVILLE (François).
Ɵ Les Ténèbres, which are the lamentations of Ieremie. Paris, Matthieu Guillemot, 1599. Booklet in-8, tan morocco, jansenist, gilt title on spine, interior lace, gilt edges (Duru 1860). First edition of this translation in French verse of the Lamentations of Jeremiah, followed by a Hymn on the Nativity of Our Lord & Savior Iesus Christ. A fine copy, in a fine binding signed Duru. From the libraries of Am. Berton, Albert Pascal and Auguste-Pierre Garnier. Long handwritten note about the work on the first two endpapers: Béroalde de Verville, author of this little book, has translated with more fidelity than elegance, the lessons of the Office of Darkness; it is even to be noticed that he has abstained from the licenses and crudities of language with which he liked to enamel all his books. I had indicated to Brunet this thin opuscule; but, volume 1, column 804, he amalgamated it with 2 others [...]. I will not say that it is here the only known copy, but the only one that I know. January 1874. The last two leaves are restored. Tchemerzine, t. I, p. 669. - Diane Barbier-Mueller, Inventaire..., n°62.
