BOISSIÈRE (Claude de).
Ɵ Art poetique reduict et abrege, en singulier ordre & souveraine methode, pour le soulas de l'aprehension & recreation des espritz. Printed in Paris by Annet Brière [for Jehan Gentil], 1554. Booklet in-8, red morocco, gilt figure in the center, interior lace, gilt edges (Trautz-Bauzonnet). First edition, dedicated to damoiselle Marie de La Haye. This rare work by this humanist from Dauphiné, versed in mathematics, is a condensed version of the Art poétique françois by Thomas Sébillet, a famous theoretical discourse on poetry published in 1548. One cannot overemphasize the striking clarity of this summary [...]. [Boissière] follows quite faithfully the order adopted by Sébillet, from whom he almost always borrows his examples. But he brings an unexpected clarity to many questions where his predecessor is lost in subtle distinctions, in idle digressions, in approximate and contradictory definitions (Félix Gaiffe). The volume ends with five verses addressed to the author by Eustache de Martigny, followed by the completion of printing dated November 17, 1555. A fine copy, from the libraries of James Toovey (bookplate with motto Inter folia fructus), and of the Dauphin bibliophile Paul Couturier de Royas who had his own number embossed on the first cover. Picot, Rothschild, n°429. - Diane Barbier-Mueller, Inventaire..., n°90.
