BRACH (Pierre de).
Ɵ The Poems. Bordeaux, Simon Millanges, 1576. In-4, green morocco, triple fillet gilt, spine decorated with grotesque, interior lace, gilt edges (E. & A. Maylander). First edition, very rare, of this collection of poems by Pierre de Brach (1549-1605), an esteemed poet from Bordeaux. Published by Simon de Millanges, Montaigne's printer, whose typographical mark appears on the title (Silvestre, n°477), it is decorated with a woodcut medallion portrait of the author. The work is divided into three books and contains a total of 216 pieces. The first one, entitled L'Aimée and dedicated to his friend Mademoiselle Diane de Foix de Candalle, is a collection of sonnets, elegies and odes; it opens with these verses which testify of the passion of the poet for his muse: Je chante la chaleur d'une bruslante flamme, / Et la douleur d'un coup dans mon cœur enfoncé.... Picot, in the Rothschild catalog, reveals the identity of this muse: Anne de Perrot, whom the poet had married in 1572. The second book contains the Hymne de Bourdeaux, a long poem dedicated to Ronsard celebrating the origins of this city, its antiquities and the famous men it has seen born, an ode Sur la Monomachie de David et de Goliat, dedicated to Montaigne To whom on the mount Parnasse, / The Muses have given place, and an Ode de la paix. The third and last book, under the title Meslanges, includes various poems of which a very interesting Voyage en Gascogne made in company of the Gascon poet Du Bartas. Most of these poems are addressed to illustrious persons of the city of Bordeaux. Small restoration in the upper margin of the title and on the edge of 2 introductory leaves. Title a little soiled with old handwritten mentions almost erased. In spite of these small defects, the copy is very pleasant, well bound, the spine finely decorated in the grotesque style. J. P. Barbier-Mueller, IV-1, n°53. - Picot, Rothschild, n°2931. - Diane Barbier-Mueller, Inventaire..., n°101.
