Ɵ The Pleiades, divided into VII books. Where in the explanation of the ancient Prophecies, conferred with the Oracles of the famous & celebrated Nostra-Damus, is treated of the renewal of the centuries, change of Empires, & advancement of the Christian name. With the promises, victories, & crowns promised to our magnanimous Prince, Henry IIII King of France & Navarre. Lyon, Pierre Rigaud, 1603. In-8, supple vellum overlay, traces of binding, handwritten title on spine, penciled title on headband (Placed in an antique vellum). Very rare first edition of the Pleiades, a curious collection of predictions in prose and verse. It is decorated with a beautiful allegorical title-frontispiece engraved on copper by Jacques de Fornazeris. The royal coat of arms is woodcut on the back of the last page of the text. Jean-Aimé de Chavigny, an astrologer born in Beaune around 1524 and who died around 1604, was Nostradamus' student and first commentator. In this work, thanks to the seven pleiades or "vaticinations", he gives the "royal horoscope" of king Henri IV, predicting him many fortunes, victories, & crowns.
