CHEVALIER (Guillaume de).
Ɵ Le Decez ou Fin du monde. Paris, Robert le Fizelier, 1584. In-4, green half-basane, smooth spine decorated with gilt fillets, speckled edges (Binding of the first half of the 19th century). First edition, very rare, of this poem describing in three "visions" the horrible & frightening changes that will take place in this last season. It is one of the main works of a genre that could be called "apocalyptic poetry", born in the wake of Du Bartas' Sepmaine, and where pseudo-prophets are more interested in the wreckage of Man and the universal destruction of God's Work than in his very creation. Almost nothing is known about Guillaume de Chevalier. An emulator of Du Bartas, he endeavors here to represent what will be when nothing will be anymore (Viollet-le-Duc): At this last assault the frightful vengeance / Of the good, iust, beautiful God, the World will shake / All will tremble of fright, the horror espouventable / The front of the Universe of a night will cover (f. 51). Very careful printing in italic characters, the title decorated with the typographic mark of Robert le Fizelier. From the libraries of Viollet-le-Duc (1847, supplement, p. 21), Bordes de Fortage (II, 1925, n°1711), and Robert de Billy. Small trace of worm in the bottom of the quires, not serious. Small ink stain on one page of the notice to the reader. Covers rubbed. J. P. Barbier-Mueller, IV-1, n°66. - N. Ducimetière, Mignonne..., p. 425. - Diane Barbier-Mueller, Inventaire..., n°125.
