CHOLIÈRES (Jean Dagonneau, sieur de).
Ɵ La Guerre des Masles contre les Femelles: Representing in three Dialogues the prerogatives & dignities of both sexes. Avec les Meslanges Poëtiques. Paris, Pierre Chevillot, 1588. In-12, porphyry calf, gilt roulette in frame, smooth spine decorated, red title page, spotted edges (Binding of the end of the 18th century). Extremely rare first edition of this work, probably the best, by the sieur de Cholières, poet and lawyer whose colourful language reminds those of Rabelais and Tabourot. A reprint of 100 copies was made in 1864 at the initiative of Paul Lacroix. The volume includes the Furieuse et effroiable guerre des masles contre les femelles, a work divided into three prose dialogues interspersed with a few tirades in verse, in which the supporters and opponents of the fair sex argue. The Mélanges poétiques (poetic mixtures) gather numerous versified pieces (sonnets, stanzas, quatrains, etc.) of the author, many of which debate about love. Denunciation of the tyranny of the husbands, whose power is of divine right and who can make die their wife "to have drunk a little wine". Cholières, not without finesse, draws a picture of the political and social condition of the woman in the 16th century (Pia, Dictionnaire des œuvres érotiques, p. 206). Handwritten bookplate on the title. From the libraries of Viollet-le-Duc (II, 1847, p. 156) and Auguste-Pierre Garnier. Restorations to the binding (headbands, corners and a spine). Marginal staining and spotting on the last few leaves. J. P. Barbier-Mueller, IV-1, n°67. - Gay-Lemonnyer, t. II, col. 441. - Diane Barbier-Mueller, Inventaire..., n°126.
