CORROZET (Gilles).
Ɵ Le Parnasse des poètes françois modernes, Contenant leurs plus riches & graves Sentences, Discourses, Descriptions, & doctes enseignemens. Paris, Pour Robert Le Mangnier, 1578. In-16, glazed fawn calf, gilt fillet, gilt fleuron with azure background in the center, spine decorated, gilt edges (period binding). Third edition of this poetic collection published by Gilles Corrozet (1510-1568) who dedicated it to the French poets. It contains nearly 550 quotations, about a hundred more than the original edition of 1571. To the numerous poems already published in the previous editions, in particular those of the members of the Pléiade (Baïf, Du Bellay, Jodelle, Pontus de Tyard, Ronsard), are added here extracts from Guillaume Belliard, Pierre de Brach, Jean de Boyssières, Philippe Desportes, Amadis Jamyn, Jean de la Taille and Pierre Le Loyer. This Parnasse is not an anthology. Truncated verses, cut, put end to end: Corrozet apologized for his audacity with tranquillity. He acted in this way to "better bind and join the sense of poetry and sentences". [...] But Corrozet had, in addition, the ambition to forge, by means of his quotations, a vast lesson of morals (J. P. Barbier-Mueller, II, n°78, for the original edition of 1571). Staining affecting the last four quires. Spine rebacked, gilding of the edges later. Lachèvre, t. I, p. 90. - Diane Barbier-Mueller, Inventaire..., n°905
