DEFFRANS (Christophe).
Ɵ The Histories of the Poets: understood at the great Olympus, ensuing the Metamorphosis of Ovid: And other Aditions and Poetical Histories proper to the poetic. Niort, Thomas Portau, 1595. In-8, olive green morocco, double framed with gilt fillets, smooth spine decorated, gilt title throughout, interior roulette, gilt edges (Modern binding in the old taste). Extremely rare first edition of this translation in verse of Ovid's Metamorphoses, by Christophe Deffrans (or des Francs), lord of la Jalousière and of la Chalonnière, poet from Poitou, who died in 1596 according to Haag. It came off the presses of Thomas Portau, the first printer established in Niort (cf. Clouzot, Notes pour servir à l'histoire de l'imprimerie à Niort, pp. 9-11). The work is very singular: indeed, our poet was not only satisfied to put Ovid in verse, he also tried to put him in music on a unique tune, printed at the head of the work and thanks to which can be sung all the book except the ends of chapters or beginnings. Small crowned number VAG, in pink ink, at the foot of the title. Small marginal wetness and foxing to a few leaves. Lower corner of title and leaves 249 and 281 restored, with small loss of letters on leaf 249. La Bouralière, p. 173. - Diane Barbier-Mueller, Inventaire..., n°144.
