DES AUTELS (Guillaume).
Ɵ Harengue au peuple françois contre la rebellion. Paris, Pour Vincent Sertenas, 1560. in-4, antique vellum (modern binding). First edition of this violent pamphlet against the Protestants, by Guillaume des Autels (1529-1581), friend of Maurice Scève and cousin of Pontus de Tyard. The undertaking of the Reformed against Amboise awakened his slumbering inspiration. In 1560, he gave a Harangue to the French people against the rebellion, which earned him the dedication by Ronsard of the magnificent Élégie sur les troubles d'Amboise, when the Vendômois, a few months later, shot this formidable arrow at the Protestant troublemakers (J. P. Barbier-Mueller). In his Bibliothèque poétique, J. P. Barbier-Mueller underlined the rarity of this booklet and said that he had never seen it in commerce (III, p. 367, note 450). Tchemerzine, t. II, p. 768, reproduction b, places this edition in 20 leaves before an edition of the same year in 22 leaves (c ). - Diane Barbier-Mueller, Inventaire..., n°156.
