DES MASURES (Louis).
Ɵ - VIRGILE. The Aeneid of Virgil, prince of the Latin poets. Lyon, Jean de Tournes, 1560. In-4, brown morocco, triple bold and lean fillet in frame, central frame drawn by a cold border and sets of fillets, spine decorated, the caissons decorated in the same way, double fillet inside with fleuron at the corners, gilt edges (G. Mercier sr de son père 1921). First complete edition, in the translation of Louis des Masures. It gathers the twelve books of the Aeneid, which the translator had begun publishing in 1547. Elegant printing in italic type, the Latin text printed in a sleeve next to the French translation. The title is surrounded by the publisher's very nice "curved arabesque" frame. The illustration includes 12 large and delightful woodcut vignettes, one at the head of each of the twelve songs: 8 of them appear here for the first time and are in first printing. Born in Tournai, the poet and humanist Louis des Masures (1515-1574) was the secretary of the house of Lorraine, which offered him protection during his youth until his conversion to Protestantism. A very fine copy of this magnificent edition, perfectly dressed by Mercier. It bears, at the bottom of the title, this ex-libris written in pen A. Pierre le Mynier, and comes from the Lindeboom library (1925, n°138). Skilful marginal restoration at the top of the first 223 pages and the last 3 leaves. J. P. Barbier-Mueller, IV-1, n°86. - Brun, p. 312. - Cartier, n°467. - Diane Barbier-Mueller, Inventaire..., n°162.
